Auto Parts HS Code — Vehicle Components, Accessories & EV Parts
Brake pads: HS 8708.30. Oil filters: 8421.23. Wheels: 8708.70. Car batteries: 8507.60.
Auto parts are one of the most trade-sensitive product categories. USMCA (formerly NAFTA) rules of origin determine whether parts moving between the US, Canada, and Mexico qualify for duty-free treatment. Getting the HS code wrong doesn't just cost you duty, it can invalidate your USMCA certification.

Key auto parts HS codes
Most auto parts fall under Chapter 87 (vehicles) or Chapter 84-85 (machinery/electrical). The classification depends on the specific component.

USMCA duty-free qualification
Auto parts manufactured in the US, Canada, or Mexico may qualify for 0% duty under USMCA. The key requirement is regional value content (RVC). Most auto parts need 75% RVC calculated under the net cost method.
A Certificate of Origin (USMCA Certification of Origin) is required. Self-certification is allowed. You don't need a third-party certificate, but you must keep records for 5 years.
EV-specific parts
Electric vehicle components have their own classification challenges. EV batteries (8507.60) face 3.5% US duty plus potential Section 301 surcharges from China. EV motors classify under 8501 (electric motors), not 8708.
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) battery sourcing requirements affect EV tax credits but not HS classification or import duty. These are separate compliance tracks.
Frequently asked questions
- Do aftermarket parts classify the same as OEM parts?
- Yes. HS classification is based on the part's function, not whether it's OEM or aftermarket. An aftermarket brake pad is 8708.30, same as a Toyota OEM pad.
- What about car accessories (phone mounts, seat covers)?
- Phone mounts: 3926.90 (plastic articles) or 8302.30 (metal mounts). Seat covers: 9401.90 (parts of seats) or 6307.90 (textile articles). These are NOT auto parts under 8708.
